Liverpool are reportedly eyeing a move for Tottenham midfielder Rodrigo Bentancur as an alternative to the likes of Jude Bellingham and Enzo Fernandez.
The Reds are bound to be linked with every midfielder under the sun in the coming months as it is common knowledge that they are in the market for one or two players in the middle of the pitch.
Sofyan Amrabat has reportedly joined their list of targets off the back of his star showings for Morocco at the World Cup.
Now Liverpool are being linked with Tottenham Hotspur star Bentancur.
The Uruguay international only joined Spurs in January and he has been able to hit the ground running in the Premier League.
Bentancur has played in a more advanced role for Tottenham this term and he has benefitted from this with him grabbing four goals and two assists in 14 Premier League outings.
It only cost Spurs around £20m to sign Bentancur from Juventus and this has proven to be an astute investment.
He has been performing so well that he is already being linked with a transfer elsewhere.
Spanish outlet El Crack Deportivo are reporting that Liverpool ‘desire’ Bentancur.
They are not alone though as Manchester United and Real Madrid are also said to be interested in the midfielder.
This is the only information provided by the report. Given that it is an outlet based in Spain, perhaps take this with a pinch of salt as they are not renowned for their reliability.
You imagine Jurgen Klopp is an admirer of Bentancur but it would take a huge offer to tempt Spurs into selling a player they only recruited in January.
More serious targets for Liverpool appear to be Bellingham and Fernandes.
Bellingham has established himself as one of the world’s best young midfielders and clubs are queueing up to sign him from Borussia Dortmund.
Liverpool have been in the running more than most though and they appear well-positioned to sign him next summer.
Fernandes has emerged as another target in recent weeks following his emergence for Benfica and his form for Argentina at the World Cup.
There is a £106m release clause in his contract and it was even claimed earlier this month that Liverpool have already reached a ‘pre-contract agreement’ to sign him.
But 90min are reporting that ‘talk of a done deal is premature’.
Benfica have made it clear that Fernandez will not leave in January unless his release clause is met and they are ‘unaware of any agreement’.
Liverpool are ‘tracking’ Fernandez and have been in contact with the player’s representatives but ‘they have only registered their interest at this stage’.
It is noted that Barcelona and Real Madrid are also interested in Fernandez.
